2003 NARI Coty Award Winner Kitc

This was a wonderful kitchen to work on. From the start the owners had some very concrete ideas of what they wanted and how the wanted to use their kitchen. Because they entertain a lot, they wanted lots of counter space, pantry storage, display area, two dishwashers, two sink areas, large gas cook stove, and a large built in refrigerator.

From the very beginning the owners requested that we raise the ceiling to give the room more volume. We reviewed the original plans and found that the best we could hope to do was a coffered ceiling. Once the cabinets were removed we removed the drop ceiling, much to everyone’s surprise we found the ceiling from the dining room and living room continued into the kitchen area . The wood for this ceiling was in pristine condition, and everyone agreed that it should not be covered again. However we had one problem. The ceiling was also the roof, so we had to rethink how to get the electrical into the room and the much needed heating and air conditioning into the living & dining room. Two weeks later we had new electrical and HVAC plans and work began again. Some of the other owner requests were, cherry stained cabinets, granite counters with full splash, “Command” center, stainless steel sinks & appliances, glass display shelves, glass cabinet doors, lots of lighting, epoxy aggregate flooring, and a walk in pantry. Everything they ask for was provided, plus deep drawers for pots & pans and a recycling area near the main sink. When we were doing the final electrical it became apparent that the standard white or ivory switches, plugs and covers would not look appropriate on the granite back splash. We solved the problem by having the painter do a granite faux finish on them. The result was magical. Our clients feel that the end result of the remodel was spectacular and that the kitchen now looks as if it was built in the house originally. They have even been gracious enough to allow us to show the kitchen to several future clients.
